MOVE 2050: Baton Rouge's $8.2B Roads & Transit Plan
$8.2 billion. That's how much the Baton Rouge region expects to spend on roads and transit between now and 2050, and here's the part I love: right now, you actually get a say in how it's spent. If you've ever sat on I-10 or I-12 wondering, "who plans this stuff?", this one's for you.
What happened: MOVE 2050 is out for public review
The Capital Region Planning Commission (CRPC) has released the draft of MOVE 2050, a long-range transportation plan for our area. As WBRZ reported, the draft lays out "a 25-year vision aimed at expanding and modernizing roads, transit and overall mobility."
The commission held the first of four public meetings on Wednesday evening, October 14. According to WBRZ, the folks who showed up were optimistic about the proposed changes and hoping for quicker trips and safer streets. Honestly, same.
The key numbers
$8.2 billion+ in anticipated spending through 2050, per Baton Rouge Business Report.
25 years: the plan's horizon, out to 2050.
5 parishes: Ascension, East Baton Rouge, Iberville, Livingston and West Baton Rouge. Business Report says the plan covers the urbanized areas in those parishes, plus the areas expected to become urbanized by 2050.
30 days: the public comment period, which began Monday, October 12.
4 public meetings: one down, three to go.
How to weigh in (mark your calendar)
Here's the remaining schedule, per WBRZ:
Wednesday, Oct. 21, noon to 1 p.m., virtual on Zoom
Wednesday, Oct. 28, 5:30 to 7 p.m., in person at the CRPC office, 14734 S. Harrell's Ferry Road, Baton Rouge
Wednesday, Nov. 4, noon to 1 p.m., virtual on Zoom
Zoom links and the draft plan are on the commission's site at crpcla.org. You don't have to be a traffic engineer to show up. If there's an intersection that drives you crazy on your daily commute, that's exactly the kind of real-world feedback a plan like this needs.
Why it matters if you live (or want to live) around here
When people are deciding where to buy, commute time comes up constantly. How long it takes to get to work, school or the grocery store shapes those decisions, and over time it can shape how a whole area grows.
A plan like MOVE 2050 is basically the region's roadmap for where those transportation dollars go over the next 25 years. So whether you're a homeowner in Gonzales, Prairieville, Denham Springs, Port Allen, Plaquemine or right here in the capital city, this is one of those behind-the-scenes documents that ends up touching your daily drive. And with all five parishes covered, it's not just a Baton Rouge thing. It's an all-of-us thing.
What to watch next
The big thing is the comment window. It opened October 12 and runs 30 days, so now's the time to get your two cents in. After that, keep an eye on which specific projects make the final cut. That's where the plan goes from "vision" to "orange cones on your street." Can't make any of the meetings? No problem. The draft plan is posted online for review too, so you can read through it on your own time and send in your thoughts. I'll be watching it and sharing updates as it moves along.
