St. George is one of Louisiana's newest cities, covering much of southeast East Baton Rouge Parish, and by its own estimate it's already the fifth-largest city in the state. A lot changed recently, and buyers have questions about schools, taxes and services. Here's where things stand as of October 2026.
Population is the city's own estimate; the Census Bureau hasn't published one yet. Drive time assumes no traffic and varies across the city's 60 square miles.
Voters approved St. George in 2019, and the Louisiana Supreme Court upheld it in April 2024. The first mayor, Dustin Yates, was elected in March 2025. The city covers about 60 square miles bounded by the Mississippi River, Bayou Manchac and the Amite River, including areas like Shenandoah and Village St. George.
St. George runs as a contract city. A private contractor handles administration, permitting and public works, and the East Baton Rouge Sheriff's Office provides policing. The city collects a 2% sales tax that replaced the parish's 2% inside city limits, and it charges no city property tax. There is a pending lawsuit over whether the city legally started in 2019 or 2024, with millions of dollars at stake.
St. George does not have its own school system. In May 2026, voters rejected a constitutional amendment that would have created one, with 64% voting no statewide. St. George homes are served by the East Baton Rouge Parish School System, which earned a C in 2025, its highest score ever. The parish system has said it will move forward with planned St. George school projects.
There's no reliable citywide median price yet. For one older section, Redfin's Village St. George data showed a median sale price of about $260,900 in September 2026. Across the city you'll find everything from subdivisions built in the 1950s and 1960s, like Village St. George, to much newer ones, so pricing depends heavily on the neighborhood.
Some well-known spots nearby are not in St. George. The Mall of Louisiana, L'Auberge, Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center, Costco and Siegen Lane Marketplace were annexed into Baton Rouge before St. George formed. When it matters for taxes or services, we confirm which city a home is actually in.
I-10, Airline Highway, Jefferson Highway and Nicholson Drive all run through the area. From Shenandoah, downtown Baton Rouge and LSU are each about 19 minutes away without traffic, though I-10 congestion is a daily factor.
The city borders the Amite River and Bayou Manchac, and flood risk varies a lot by street. Do your research on every home.
Yes. Voters approved it in 2019, and the Louisiana Supreme Court upheld the incorporation in April 2024. Its first mayor took office in July 2025.
No. In May 2026 voters rejected the amendment that would have created a St. George school system, so homes there are served by East Baton Rouge Parish schools.
The city itself levies no property tax. It relies mainly on a 2% sales tax. Parish and other property taxes still apply, so check the total for any home.
No. The mall, L'Auberge, Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center and Costco were annexed into Baton Rouge before St. George formed.
